Pull out a strand of hair. Drop it into a bowl of water and notice if the strand sinks or floats.
WHAT IT MEANS
Damage to the hair’s cuticle layer makes the strands more porous, which allows the hair to absorb water and therefore sink. Sinking strands are a sign of damage probably caused by heat styling, chemical processing, and other environmental factors.
WHAT TO DO
Let your hair air dry as often as you can to decrease the time spent under the heat of the blow dryer. Be conscientous of the amount of straightening and curling you put your hair through. Moisturizing products and treatments can also help resuscitate hair by helping seal the gaps in the cuticle layer.
